The incidence of skin problems is on the rise. When I was a young, new graduated beauty therapist in the mid 80’s, I was guaranteed that most of the people walking in my door had strong skin but these days the new normal is to have a weakened skin barrier which leads to the wide range of problems we are now seeing.
I think there are many reasons why there is an increase in the number of skin problems:
- our diets are generally less nutritious so deficiencies mean our skin isn’t created to be as strong as it should be in the first place.
- we have had decades of an overclean and sometimes aggressive approach to skin care that weakens the natural barrier.
- there has been an increase in stress levels especially recently which increases the amount of circulating stress hormones and inflames the skin.
- Lastly, we have been through a period of widespread mask use which can upset the skin’s balance.
The fact is that more and more people are having trouble with their skin and beauty therapists trained in the holistic treatment of skin can help correct these skin problems or even better, help people avoid more severe problems by addressing barrier disordered skin in its early stages.
But the secret to treating skin problems is to know what the causative factors are and how we can address them.
I am sure you are aware that our skin is quite a unique organ. It’s one of the few in the body that is impacted by both the internal and external environment. This means we need to consider both aspects when treating the skin. Failing to do so means that we could easily miss a factor that is driving the skin problem and we will have limited success in healing the skin.
It is for this reason that I have developed a 6-month e-course, Treating the Skin Holistically. This course teaches beauty therapists how to work holistically with the skin and how to get great results with your clients skin problems. Click here to find out more
